PHYSICS AND THE VISUAL ARTS
Notes on LAB 1
Before you begin Lab 1, be sure to go through the check list in the front of the lab manual to identify all of the
elements in the kit of supplies and to make sure that you received everything. In the event that anything is missing,
please contact the Distance Education Office promptly so that you will have everything needed for all of the lessons.
A check list of the lab kit on the class site inclues a link to photos identifying all of
the items in the kit. All items may not look exactly like the ones shown, but they should be easily recognized.
You should view the DVD lesson before you try the lab exercises. Notice that each lab lesson includes a list of
supplies. You should gather the necessary materials before you begin to work. As you begin, be sure to write in your
lab manual, answering the questions and making copious notes. When you have completed the work and tried to make sense
of it all, then you should go to the LONCAPA and answer the questions there.
Most of the questions are multiple
choice, but a few may require that you insert a numerical answer obtained from your work. Most of the questions will be worth one
point each. Finally, the last question on every lab set will be an open-ended question that serves as a summary of you work. These
questions will be worth a maximum of 10 points each. Please answer them carefully. You must include enough information to allow the
instructor to conclude that you actually performed the work and understand it. At the very least, address the points raised by the
question. Failure to do so will seriously affect your grade. Remember that you can edit your work on the LONCAPA, so there will be no excuse for poor spelling and grammar. While the
summary may be brief, it must be complete and address all the relevant parts of the exercise.
