OBJECTIVE:

1.     Students listed under Goals #1 must complete the five topics on the Objectives of ASTR 111 that they have not previously completed under rule #1 and will complete any laboratories associated with this work.

2.     Students listed under Goals #2 will arrange for a syllabus that supplements their previous course work.

3.     Students listed under Goals #3 will complete a restricted set of material that will include one to three of the two hour laboratories

4.     Except for students listed in Goals #2, requirements are listed in the syllabus.

GOALS:

1.     Students who are currently enrolled in, or previously received credit for ASTR 111 or an equivalent course, will understand at least two, and no more than five, of the goals of ASTR 111 in greater detail. They will choose material not covered in their ASTR 111 course.

2.     Students who have never taken ASTR 111 nor transferred astronomy credit from another institution will understand the material in at least two and no more than five of the learning objectives of ASTR 111.

3.     Students, who transfer with astronomy credit at another institution, will understand at least and no more than five learning objects agreed upon by the professor and student.

This syllabus is for students enrolled in one (1) or two (2) hour(s) of astronomy. If you are taking four (4) or more hours please refer to the ASTR 111 or the ASTR 211 syllabus.

I. INFORMATION THAT IS COMMON TO ALL TERMS

You are responsible for verifying that our records of your work are correct. Progress is available on the WEB by index code and student ID number. Please verify that the posting is correct each week. Keep records of masteries and labs. Report any errors immediately.

A calculator is required for all laboratories.

FOR CREDIT UNITS MUST APPEAR ON THE PROGRESS SHEET ON THE LINE "AVAILABLE FOR CREDIT".

No grades will be raised after they are recorded by the registrar. Check the notice board as to dates.

1.  Students who have previously taken ASTR 111 or ASTR 111 and ASTR 211 at this campus

Use any units not  credited for your previous course(s). Units 51 and 54 can only be counted if they are carryover credit from a previously passed enrollment in ASTR 111. Any of Units 2-7 which are not listed as previously done must be included in your work this term. As before, if a unit has a laboratory portion, this portion must also be completed to receive credit.

Please see Prof. Safko or the staff member in charge of your course as soon as possible. Your requirements will be as in Ō1Ķ above; however, the units to be done will be chosen by the instructor.

3.  Students with no previous astronomy course credit

Refer to the ASTR 111 syllabus for general rules. Units 51 and 54 may not be used for your grade. If a Unit has a laboratory portion, this portion must also be completed to receive credit.

INCOMPLETES

Incompletes are given only for UNANTICIPATED illness, accident, family or work related responsibility. Requests must be in writing, in detail, and clearly explain how the circumstances fit the eligibility requirements.  It must be submitted no later than reading day and must be submitted to your instructor in person.  A request will not be considered if you did not show proportional progress towards a passing grade during that portion of the term not covered by your exigency.  If your college permits, these courses may be taken on a pass/fail option.  A grade of D or better is a satisfactory grade. See your dean's office for permission forms.  Your instructor does not sign the request form.  Print the instructor's name in the space on the form. Do not contact the instructor.

Planetarium lectures – Unit 51 credit – choose one – only offers for the term.  Schedule posted.

2 Oct.

DROP DATE -- Students in 111 who have not mastered at least: Unit 1 and a total of 3 Units from 2-7  are strongly urged to withdraw (Labs or masteries will each count as 1/2 unit for this purpose).  Students in 211 or 311 should have completed 3 units.  Students in 1 or 2 hours should have completed at least one unit per hour.

8 Oct.

Schedule of makeup labs for Units 2-7 and advanced (211/311) lab schedule available on the WEB. Signup within one week after prelab.

9 Oct..

Midpoint of semester — use grading information to calculate your midterm grade.  One-half the work needed for a passing grade is considered satisfactory for midterm.  Evidence of attendance for Unit 51 must be submitted by this date.

RESTRICTION ON TRIES

You may take as many different units per day as desired; however, you may attempt any given Unit or PreLab only two (2) times per day with at least a 30 min. study period between tries. After 4 attempts on any of Units 1-7 you should bring your lists of missed objectives to your instructor or a senior student staff member and about the unit.  (Staff in the EV can help only if the center is not busy.)  After discussing your problems  you may make additional attempts.
