Public Lecture - Anthony P. French (Professor of Physics Emeritus Massachusetts Institute of Technology) will give a lecture entitled "A Fledgling Physicist in the British and American Atomic Bomb Projects, 1942-1946." The Lecture will be held in the Law Center in the Law School Auditorium on Thursday, October 23, 2003 4:00 PM.
The public is invited to attend.

Graduate Student Awards
Clarisse Tur (graduate student working in experimental Nuclear Physics) was awarded the Southeastern Universities Research Association
(SURA)/Jefferson Laboratory Graduate Fellowship for the 2003-2004 academic year.
Pawel Morawiec has received the Physics and Astronomy Graduate Student Teaching award.
Deepashri Thatte was the second place winner in oral presentations in the category of Physics and Life Sciences on Graduate Student Day 2003 held April 2. Ms. Thatte gave a presentation about her research in astrophysics titled "Study of Element Abundances in Three Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers".
Christine Gibson received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). Christine was nominated for the award by the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Her award includes a complimentary one year student membership in AAPT. With the award she will receive one of the Association's journals and Physics Today.
Undergraduate Student Awards
Amanda K. Whaley has received the College of Science and Mathematics Rising Senior Award in Physics. Ms. Whaley has also been awarded an NSF scholarship to the
Rice Quantum Institute's Research Experience for Undergraduates.
Grayden Jay Gillis has received the Nina and Frank Avignone Fellowship Award.

Nobel Laureate Jerome Friedman of Massachusetts Institute of Technology will give a Public Lecture
"Are We Really Made of Quarks" on Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at 6:00 PM in the Law School Auditorium of USC.
