The Department of Physics and Astronomy is pleased to announce that the department will host Homecoming 2003 for the College of Science & Mathematics. Homecoming will be held on the weekend of October 23-25. Be sure to mark your calendar and make a date to join with former classmates and faculty for a celebratory weekend.
The festivities will get underway at 4:00 pm on Thursday, October 23 with a public lecture by Professor Tony French of M.I.T. Dr. French will speak about his personal memories of the Manhattan Project. Prior to leaving for M.I.T., Dr. French was Head of the U.S.C. Department of Physics in the 1950s and early 1960s.
On Friday afternoon beginning at 5:30 pm, we will host a special program to recognize the dedication to teaching, commitment to service, and kindness of two former faculty members, Profs. Ed Lerner and Ron Edge. Both of these outstanding faculty members served in our Department from the 1950s until their retirement. Together with Dr. French they led the way to establish our Ph.D. Program.
A reception will be held immediately following the recognition program. It will be a great time to see and visit with old friends, classmates, and faculty. We hope you will make plans to be with us for this weekend to renew old acquaintances and to find out what is happening now at your alma mater. If you can join us for Homecoming 2003, sign our guest list now so that your former classmates will know that you are coming. List of people who are coming so that you can see who else will be here. Make your plans to be with us as this is sure to be a terrific event.
As a tribute to these two faculty, friends are establishing the Ed Lerner and Ron Edge Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will be awarded to two outstanding graduate students, one each in theoretical and experimental physics. in the U.S.C. Department of Physics & Astronomy. With the steadily increasing costs of tuition, the Lerner-Edge Scholarship will make a significant contribution to enable students to earn their graduate degree. We invite you to join in our efforts to honor Profs. Lerner and Edge by contributing to the scholarship fund. To do so, make out your checks to USC Educational Foundation and send it to Ann Cameron, College of Science and Mathematics, U.S.C., Columbia, SC 29208. Be sure to specify the Ed Lerner and Ron Edge Scholarship Fund on the check.
Homecoming continues on Saturday when the Gamecocks meet the Vanderbilt Commodores at Williams-Brice Stadium. Come cheer for Carolina!
