Extensive research in both theoretical and experimental physics is carried out by the physics faculty and students at the University of South Carolina. Experimental research is conducted both on-campus in condensed matter laboratories and computational facilities, and off-campus at major national and international laboratories.

Off-campus laboratories where USC professors are conducting experiments include Fermilab near Chicago, Thomas Jefferson Laboratory in Virginia, Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory in California, CERN in Switzerland, and within the Gran Sasso mountain in Italy.

Research may be done by a large team observing particles form a huge accelerator, or by two or three individuals discussing quantum theory at a blackboard. Ample and varied opportunities exist for graduade students to conduct research and earn advanced degrees and for undergraduate students to participate.
